Hawaii Preparatory Academy served up the biggest upset of the day at the HHSAA Division II baseball tournament on Thursday at Hans L’Orange Field on Oahu.
Behind a four-hitter from pitcher Jonah Hurney, the BIIF runner-up Ka Makani (10-10) knocked off previously undefeated OIA champion and No. 2 seed Waianae 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Hawaii Prep’s semifinal game is today at 1 p.m. against the winner of the Damien-Farrington matchup, which ended after West Hawaii Today’s deadline.
Hurney went the distance in the victory, striking out seven while only issuing one walk. He also blasted a triple and scored a run.
Finn Richmond had the best day at the plate for Hawaii Prep, going 2 of 4 with the eventual game-winning RBI in the fifth inning. As a team, Ka Makani had seven hits in the game, with Michael Hughes and Blake Winston also picking up RBIs.
Previously, Ka Makani had only advanced to the semifinal once. That was in 2010 and BIIF rival Kamehameha-Hawaii bounced them out of the tournament. Ka Makani settled for a third place finish that season.
On the other side of the bracket, Kamehameha-Hawaii, the the top seed and defending champion, defeated Radford 8-0.
The Warriors play at 10 a.m. today against Kauai.
In Division I, BIIF runner-up Waiakea advanced to the semifinals by downing No. 2 seed Kailua 3-1. Meanwhile, Hilo — the BIIF champion — was eliminated after a 4-3 loss to Campbell.
